  • Members are encouraged to get involved with one of the committees listed below. Chamber ommittees have a specific focus, each of which is designed to increase commerce, market our members, share Abilene to the world, and improve business management.   • Education & Civic Engagement Committee

    2018 Chairs - Travis Sawyer & Darwin Alderson

    The Education & Civic Engagement Committee will work to provide opportunities for our members to develop business management skills in a clear and concise format is vital to community development. This committee will also be responsible for educating and advocating on behalf of a diverse business community. This will include keeping up to date and reporting on legislative actions of the city, county and state. Members of this committee should be in tune with the educational needs of area businesses and have a general working knowledge of governmental hierarchy and the local political climate. (The Education & Legislative Committee may coordinate with the Events & Fundraising Committee on some activities.)

    Education & Legislative Committee Responsibilities:

    • Identify relevant training topics
    • Organize training events and resources
    • Disseminate training information
    • Evaluate existing and on-going training efforts
    • Update the Chamber Board on relevant government and legislative issues
    • Coordinate periodic governmental update forums with city, county, and state representatives
    • Organize candidate forums for upcoming elections

    Events & Fundraising Committee

    2018 Chairs - Kenny Roelofsen & Kyle Becker

    The Chamber organizes, sponsors, and promotes a number of community events designed to generate commerce, promote member businesses, and foster a sense of community. The Event & Fundraising Committee will be responsible for coordinating all Chamber events. If the Chamber is approached about hosting or co-sponsoring an event, the request will be evaluated by this committee. These efforts require committee members who are creative, organized team players with great follow through.

    Events & Fundraising Committee Responsibilities:

    • Annual Banquet
    • Monthly Business After Hours
    • Groundbreaking & Ribbon Cutting events
    • Lunch & Learn events
    • Chamber fundraising events to generate non-dues revenue
    • Other events as deemed appropriate
    • Assist in creating invitations and marketing materials for events
    • Help to promote events and distribute invitations and marketing materials

    Communications & Public Relations Committee

    2018 Chair - Diana Miller

    The Communication & Public Relations Committee will work to promote, advertise and increase awareness of the Chamber and its mission. This committee will also work to implement new and effective ways to promote member businesses and strengthen those efforts already in place. An additional function of this committee is to help promote the Abilene area as a great place to live, work, play and shop. Committee members should have some insight into what real world factors bring people to live in the area and how to showcase or target those factors.

    Communication & Public Relations Committee Responsibilities:

    • Identify opportunities for positive public relations within the community
    • Determine appropriate messages and information to share with the membership
    • Assist with marketing activities which promote quality of life in Abilene
    • Engage in personal outreach and networking with new residents and new Chamber members
    • Coordinate with the Executive Director to relay information via newspaper, radio and television, social media, etc.
